As more and more variable renewable energy (VRE) projects like solar and wind power are developed, it is important for system operators, project developers, and other key stakeholders to ensure their effective integration onto the power grid. A least-cost operational method for reducing the impact and fully realizing the benefits of VRE integration is improved generation forecasting. Improved forecasting can reduce reserve requirements, improve system flexibility, reduce curtailments, and increase system reliability. It is a key capability for ensuring that higher shares of VRE can be achieved.
